Tips To Improve Learning in Children With Autism

March 29, 2023

As parents, we want the best for our children, and sometimes we don’t know how to encourage those positive behaviors effectively. Traditional methods of communication may not accommodate children with autism, and we need to make connections to help with homework or explain social behaviors. You can help your child excel in school by being patient and understanding.

It’s important to know that every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Here are some tips to improve learning in children with autism.

Structure Is Key

You may already know this, but establishing a routine is key in your child’s journey. Structure in your after-school routine will make your child less worried about what will happen next. Incorporate a snack time and a wind-down period for your child to decompress and relax before tempting them with responsibilities or activities.

If there are any changes in the after-school routine, be sure to tell your child ahead of time and explain those changes to quell anxiety.

Avoid Sensory Overload

Children with autism can be over-sensitive or under-sensitive to things we may not notice. Whether it’s certain sounds, lighting, or smells, it’s important that you identify what can trigger overstimulation. Sometimes, a reaction to overstimulation can result in problematic behaviors, such as kicking, biting, or scratching.

Tip: Use cool, calming colors to help create a more relaxing atmosphere in your child’s hangout area or bedroom. Avoid covering the walls with posters and decorations.

Encourage Social Interactions

Some children with autism refrain from social interactions, and it’s important that you exhibit patience and encouragement when interacting with them. Don’t limit your child. Instead, encourage them to practice socialization and communication skills to the best of their ability. Working with our ABA therapists allows you to learn effective ways to influence peer-to-peer communication.

Use Visual Aids in Your Lessons

A great way to improve learning in children with autism is through visuals. Use drawings, photographs, picture cards, or videos to simplify the information as much as possible. You can use visuals as a reminder for home rules, organization, and guides for performing some tasks. Using visuals and modeling desired behavior will help your child much more than a wordy explanation.

Remember That Every Child Is Different

You may already have a child or have been around many children, but it’s important to remember that every child is different. What worked for one child may not work for another, and it’s essential to treat your child as an individual. Celebrate their small and big wins, and make some accommodations if needed. Understand that it’s okay if some recommendations don’t work!
